Journey of Entrepreneurship: Can You Take the Plunge?

Becoming an entrepreneur is not an easy journey. If you really want to succeed at it, you really have to learn about business, law, taxes, how to manage money, how to grow capital, and tons of other really important subjects. Granted, you should be able to hire an expert for each category in the end but in order to tell the difference between a good expert and a bad expert, you have to learn the basic information first.
Another thing you have to do is get rid of your debt and learn to live frugally. At first, you have to do tons of work before you’ll get paid. Can you last long enough to see your business through? If you have bad spending habits, you have to take care of that first because if you don’t, debt will sink you even before your business gets off the ground. Nobody makes a profit for the first year of a business, so don’t expect to see any incoming income for at least that long. If you have a stockpile of money saved up to survive on, and you can last a year without making any money from your business (not to mention actually losing money) then you may have a chance.

Without any risk, there is no reward. However, you still have to create a business plan for what you want to do with your business. If you have no idea where you’re going and what you want to do, running a successful company may be out of your reach. Clear, concise, concrete, and measurable goals are the key to finding your direction. Jumping in the deep end without properly analyzing the negatives first will just get you into hot water. Failing to plan is planning to fail. Although planning is not action, and action is required for entrepreneurship to succeed, it is still a vital part of the process.

When you have finally created a business plan for your business, the next step is taking the psychological jump. It’s very hard to have an employee mindset when you are an entrepeneur because the idea of having a safety net, a security blanket, or surviving due to a paycheck will only impede your success. If you want to become a part time entrepreneur, sometimes making the switch is much harder than expected. Unfortunately, there is no such thing as a part time entrepreneur. A true entrepreneur will be focusing on their business 100%. If you are part time, then you have not switched your mindset yet. You have to have a burning desire to succeed, you can’t hold back or let fears take over you. Although everyone has fears and doubts, true entrepreneurs don’t let that affect them. If you have problems with motivation and are not willing to go the extra mile for success, then you are not an entrepreneur.

Do you have the desire? Do you have the spirit? Do you just need a push in the right direction? If so, then quit your job (assuming you hate it). Until you do, your time will always seem scarce and you won’t be able to really focus on what you need to do. Not having a job will mean that if you don’t do something quick, you won’t survive. However, this won’t happen for most people. Most people will never become entrepreneurs because of the various problems in the world. “I don’t have enough time. I can’t afford to quit my job. What if I fail?” Many doubts will always run through your mind, but if you never take the first step, you’ll never take the second.

But take heart. Not everyone is destined to become an entrepreneur. It is perfectly ok. Just because you choose not to take any unnecessary risks doesn’t mean you are bad. Being an entrepeneur is only for those that will succeed at all costs (that are legal of course). They’ll do anything they have to, give up what is unnecessary, and go above and beyond for the sake of their dreams. It is never a simple task to quit your job, but doing so may enable you to change the way you think. Now that your ability to live depends on your ability to succeed, you’ll naturally increase your ability to do so. Hence the important of getting out of debt, living frugally, and having a bit of savings. That way, you get a few months to really work on your business till you see results.

However, I do not recommend quitting your job if you have no experience. That is a fool’s errand. Take on small part time projects first, learn to increase your skills, and enter a job for what it can teach you and not for the money. There is no such thing as part time entrepeneurship but you’re at least on the journey. Eventually, when you feel the time is right and you’re sick of the fear that plagues your mind, then you may make your decision.

It feels good when you finally don’t have to work for someone else to support yourself. When you are able to grasp freedom, you can achieve new dreams that many people never do. Are you one of those people? Do you have a plan and a solid commitment to succeed? Can you work consistantly every day for your dream? Do you have amazing work ethics? Do you have goals and strict deadlines? If you have all of the above, then you just might be…an entrepreneur.
