Why Doesn’t Motivation Last?
The only reason motivation doesn’t last is when it’s extrinsic. That means outside motivation. If the motivation comes from other people, it may last for a short while but it will fade. It may take weeks, days, hours, or even minutes, but it will fade. How can we avoid this? By motivating ourselves. If we have intrinsic motivation, motivation from within, we are more likely to keep reminding ourselves and succeeding. You have to want something badly enough to obsess about it day and night. You have to think of the problem from multiple angles, find out other viewpoints from other people, expand your knowledge, and increase your paradigms.
Think about the last motivational or self-help book that you read. After you finished, you probably felt inspired by the speaker’s words. You felt that you could conquer the world and that you could do anything. Did anything come out of that? For the majority of people, nothing did. The feeling would fade and they’d go back to their old habits and their old lifestyle. But there are a select few, the achievers, the champions, that took those words to heart and did something about it. If you don’t use the information to your advantage, what good is it?
Why is it that some people make changes and other people don’t? Because of our programming. Because of all of the negative feelings and doubts that we’ve already experiences. Most of the time, old habits will continue to invade our thoughts because that’s what we’ve done for so long already. And if we’re addicted to self-help and motivation books, chances are that we have actually sabotaged ourselves. Your problem is more so with an addition to information and you need to take action before success will happen. We may try new things but after one little setback, everything goes off track. Negative thoughts rush in and old habits come back. The seeds of doubt have been planted and it won’t be removed easily.
The only way to move past this line of thinking are five steps. First, identify the problem. Second, take action. Third, keep going despite setbacks. Fourth, believe in yourself, and fifth, know that everything will turn out fine in the end. You need to know what exactly is setting you back, what kind of thoughts are causing you to quit, and why you go back to old habits. When under stress, the body deals with it easier by shutting down the thinking process and doing what is familiar to it. It listens to its comfort zone. Oftentimes, if you want to succeed, you have to do the opposite that your comfort zone is telling you to. Staying in the comfort zone is good if you’re satisfied where you are, but if you want something more, you have to do that which you are uncomfortable with.
After you identify what you need to do, you have to take action. Simple words and yet so hard for most people. Why is that? Lots of people have different excuses. Not enough money, not enough time, not enough resources, I’m not smart enough, I’m too dumb, etc. Stop with the excuses! That’s all they are. Rationalize all you want but making excuses isn’t productive. You can make excuses or you can take action, you can’t do both. And once you do so, keep going. Look for workarounds if you have problems. Don’t take the easy way out, things that seem easy often won’t be. You have to be careful of scams if you’re trying to succeed. Some people are adept at offering easy solutions when you feel like quitting. If you take the bait, they’ll only be taking your money.
Keep going after what you want, and don’t let excuses and setbacks stop you from having it. If you do, I hope you’re satisfied with your life, because it’s not going to change. If you’re happy with that, all is good. But if you’re unsatisfied, don’t complain. Lots of people complain about their life and do nothing to change it. If you want a different life, change it. It’s that simple. When you get started, have faith in yourself and that everything will turn out ok. Having a positive mindset leads to success, whereas having a negative mindset will just lead you to sabotage yourself. Whatever you decide, always remember. You may not be able to change things that happen in your life but it’s up to you to make your own circumstances. It’s all on you. Are you up for it?
